NEDA Introduces Export Scheme to Boost Central Luzon's Position in International Trade

The regional branch of NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority) in Central Luzon recently launched a five-year export scheme in order to boost the region's position in the international trade. In an official statement, NEDA stated that the Regional Council-Executive Committee (RDC-EXCOM) decided to implement the Central Luzon Export Development Plan (CLEDP 2006-2010) by means of the Resolution 03-23-2006 during a conference, which took place in Malolos City (Bulacan). According to NEDA, the plan would be Central Luzon's framework in the development and growth of its export business. The scheme included an outline of the programs and strategies that would help the region achieve its targets in the international trade in the coming years.

According to reports, the new export scheme seeks to maintain the 10% share of Central Luzon from the national export performance. Moreover, the plan is expected to produce at least 0.08% of growth in the region's export profits. It must be noted that the CLEDP takes charge in planning the programs and export strategies of the region that shall be applied until 2010. The scheme covers the authorization of export promotion and development, the employment of more focused and aggressive marketing techniques in order to boost current markets and expand in other markets, the formation of a locale that fosters business growth and the enhancement of the region's competitiveness in international trade.

In an official letter to Susan Rachel G. Jose, who is in charge of the NEDA regional development coordination staff, NEDA Region 3 chief Remigio A. Mendoza stated that the CLDEP resolution would also organize a subgroup under the RDC-Sectoral Committee on Economic Development. According to him, the special committee would take charge in ensuring, monitoring, and evaluating the implementation of the new international trade scheme. During the first three months of 2006, the Philippines' exports totaled to $1.1 billion. Its products included electronics, garments, car parts, among others.

It must be noted that recently, three governors, as well as some representatives from Central Luzon traveled to the United States in an attempt to attract more American investors in their region. Governor Tomas N. Joson III (Nueva Ecija) led the delegation, which included Governors Bellaflor Angara-Castillo (Aurora), Josefina de la Cruz (Bulacan), and representatives from Pampanga and Zambales. The group aimed to look for business and international trade opportunities in terms of information technology. Chaired by Mr. Joson, the Central Luzon Investment Coordinating Council (CLICC) has been promoting Central Luzon through various promotions and road shows abroad.
